This feature lets users select several existing gift cards and consolidate their balances into a single card, making them easier to use and manage day to day.
problem
Having multiple gift cards created friction and led to lost value for users.
A first version of the gift card had launched successfully, but as usage grew a functional limit became clear: users with several cards had to manage them separately. This fragmentation made the experience clunky, made small remaining balances hard to use, and often left amounts unspent. B2B clients therefore asked for a solution that would simplify gift card management while guaranteeing the integrity of the amounts.
approach
I approached this product evolution by combining user understanding, functional needs, and technical security.
I first analysed the friction points for end users to understand what they expected in terms of simplicity and clarity. Then I worked with the technical teams to define a precise scope, identifying the main challenges: accuracy of the transferred balances, preventing user selection errors, and securing the backend transactions. The need was formalised into epics and detailed user stories, then delivered iteratively, with systematic testing and regular sign-off from the client to stay aligned with their vision.
solution
Building a dedicated flow for merging gift cards clearly, intuitively, and securely.
A new section was designed so users could see all their gift cards, select the ones to merge, and check the amounts before confirming. The user flow was shaped in close collaboration with the UX designer and frontend developer to make every action immediately clear. On the backend, safeguards were implemented to guarantee accurate balance transfers and prevent any inconsistency or tampering. The solution was validated in a staging environment before going to production.
impact
The feature significantly improved the user experience and the perceived value of the gift cards.
Users now manage their gift cards far more simply, which reduces the frustration of juggling multiple balances and limits the value lost to small unspent amounts. For B2B clients, this improvement strengthens end-user satisfaction and the overall quality of the product experience. The iterative, collaborative approach also reinforced the client relationship and their confidence in the team's ability to keep evolving the product over time.
